Going back to basics—hand claps, acoustic guitar, violins, woops and wails—can fall flat as tragic gimmicks if the artist in question fails at attacking the record at hand wholeheartedly. The Cave Singers don’t have to worry about that this time.

From start to finish, No Witch offers up a sound wise beyond its years. The genius lies in their Jekyll and Hyde sensibilities, as plucky, light-hearted meditations on a life of love (“Gifts And The Raft”, “All Land Crabs And Divinity Ghosts”) stay afloat amongst the shadowy verses of “Faze Wave” and “Black Leaf.” Mature and deliberate, each song draws from numerous influences that color metallic down strokes and shivering choruses. As strong as the album is, it leaves us a little disheartened—if only because one can only hope the live show measures up.
